ICAI Big Change: CA Final Exams Now Twice a Year — May & November Only. What Every Student Must Know.

If you are a CA Final student — stop whatever you are doing and read this carefully. On 6th April, 2026, the ICAI Council issued an official announcement that changes the very structure of how CA Final examinations will be conducted going forward. This is not a rumour, not a social media post — it is a signed notification from the Joint Secretary (Examinations) of ICAI.

⚠️ Most Critical Takeaway
The January and September CA Final windows are discontinued from the May 2026 cycle onwards. If you were counting on a September 2026 attempt as a "backup" — that window no longer exists. Your next attempt after May 2026 is November 2026.
Why Did ICAI Make This Change?
The official notification states this decision was taken "in view of the feedback from the stakeholders." While ICAI has not elaborated further, the reasoning from a student and institutional perspective is clear:

Three attempts a year meant students had less time between attempts. A 6-month gap between May and November allows deeper, more focused preparation.

What Should You Do Right Now?
If you were targeting September 2026 — pivot immediately
September 2026 does not exist anymore. Decide now: accelerate your preparation for May 2026, or commit fully to a structured 7-month plan for November 2026. Do not be caught mid-preparation with no clear target attempt.
Treat each attempt as your primary attempt
With only 2 windows a year, the cost of not clearing an attempt has doubled — in time, in articleship extension, and in career planning. A casual "I'll try again in 4 months" mindset no longer applies.
For May 2027 students — use this time wisely

Zeroinfy's Take — What This Really Means
The twice-a-year structure is a net positive for serious students. Here is why: when there were three attempts a year, many students would under-prepare for one attempt and rely on the next attempt being just four months away. That option is gone.
The students who will benefit most from this change are those who treat every attempt as a first attempt — with a full preparation cycle, a structured study plan, and the right resources. Six months between exams is actually a very reasonable and generous window if used correctly.
Plan for May or November. Prepare like it is your only shot. That is the right mindset for this new regime.
Quick FAQs
Q. Does this affect CA Inter / Foundation exams?
The notification specifically mentions CA Final Examinations only. There is no change announced for CA Inter or Foundation at this time.
Q. Is September 2026 CA Final completely cancelled?
Yes. The notification states this change is effective from the May 2026 examination onwards, which means September 2026 is discontinued. The next attempt after May 2026 will be November 2026.
Q. What about January 2027?
January is also discontinued for CA Final under the new regime. The exams will now be held only in May and November each year.
Q. Will the syllabus change with this restructuring?
The notification does not address syllabus changes — it only addresses examination frequency. Syllabus applicability (including ITA 2025 for DT) remains as per ICAI's separate notifications.
