ACCA Exemptions for CA Students: What Your Papers Are Worth

ACCA › ACCA Exemptions for CA Students

If you have studied CA, you are in the strongest exemption position of any Indian student. Here is what each stage is actually worth — and what it does not protect you from.

CA Foundation 0 exemptions

Foundation-level study generally does not map to ACCA papers. You would usually start at Applied Knowledge and sit all 13.

CA Inter cleared 5–6 commonly reported

A substantial block, usually starting you inside Applied Skills. The exact set is disputed — see the note below.

Qualified CA 9 the maximum

The full Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills block. You begin directly at Strategic Professional with four papers left.

Before you plan around these numbers

These are commonly reported outcomes, not ACCA policy. ACCA assesses each student individually against transcripts. Run your own record through ACCA's Exemptions Calculator on accaglobal.com before you budget or buy anything.

A qualified CA: what you skip, what you sit

Exempt — 9 papers

BT MA FA LW PM TX FR AA FM

The entire Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels.

You still sit — 4 papers

SBL SBR Option 1 Option 2

Strategic Business Leader, Strategic Business Reporting, and two options from AFM, APM, ATX and AAA.

Plus the two things no exemption touches: the ethics module and 36 months of practical experience with nine performance objectives. Most CAs already satisfy the experience requirement through articleship and employment — but it still has to be recorded and signed off.

The risk nobody warns CAs about

Taking all nine exemptions means your very first ACCA exam is a Strategic Professional paper.

Think about what that means. You will never have sat an ACCA exam before. You will not have seen ACCA's question style, its marking approach, or its computer-based exam interface. And the paper you meet first is the hardest format in the qualification.

SBL is not an ICAI-style paper

It is a long case-study exam built around one organisation, and a portion of the marks are awarded for professional skills — communication, commercial acumen, scepticism, judgement — rather than technical content. Strong technical knowledge alone does not pass it.

SBR is IFRS, not Ind AS

Ind AS is converged with IFRS but not identical. A CA who assumes SBR is simply FR in English tends to discover the gaps during the exam rather than before it.

No warm-up papers

A student who sat FR and AA arrives at SBR and AAA already fluent in ACCA's exam conventions. A fully exempt CA does not get that runway.

What to do about it

You do not have to accept exemptions as a block — ACCA lets you toggle each one individually and claim more later. Some CAs deliberately sit FR or AA rather than exempting it, purely to learn ACCA's exam style on a paper they already know well. It costs an exam fee and a few weeks, and it removes the format risk from the papers that actually matter.

ACCA's own guidance points the same way: if the underlying material is not fresh, sitting the exam may serve you better than skipping it.

Choosing your two option papers

This is where CA instinct can mislead. The two options that feel most familiar are not automatically the easiest.

AAA

Advanced Audit and Assurance

Natural territory if you came through audit. Built on ISAs rather than Indian standards, so the framework differs even where the thinking is familiar.

ATX

Advanced Taxation

Check the variant before you choose this. ATX is examined against a specific jurisdiction's tax system — which will not be Indian tax law. Your ICAI tax knowledge transfers far less than you would expect.

AFM

Advanced Financial Management

Valuation, corporate finance, treasury and risk. Popular with CAs moving toward corporate finance, consulting or transaction roles.

APM

Advanced Performance Management

Performance measurement and management control, with a strong written and analytical element rather than computation.

Choose on where you want your career to go, not on which syllabus looks closest to what you already studied.

CA Inter: why the number keeps changing

Search this question and you will find two different answers. Some sources say CA Inter earns five exemptions — BT, MA, FA, TX and AA. Others say six, adding LW.

We are not going to pick one and present it as fact. Both are widely published, and the difference matters — one paper is a real cost and a real block of study time.

There is a second reason to be careful here. ICAI restructured its scheme in 2023. CA Intermediate and CA Final now have different paper sets from the ones most exemption articles were written against — papers such as SFM and AMA no longer exist in the form those articles describe. Exemption mapping is reviewed when a body changes its curriculum, so guidance written before 2023 may simply no longer apply.

What this means for you

If you cleared CA Inter under the new scheme, treat every published exemption table — including ours — as indicative only. Run the calculator, and if your result differs from what you expected, that is ACCA's assessment of your specific record, not an error.

The cost most CAs underestimate

Nine exemptions is nine separate fees. Applied Skills exemptions cost more per paper than Applied Knowledge ones, so a full CA block is the most expensive exemption outcome available — a significant one-time amount before you have sat a single exam.

It is still cheaper than studying and sitting nine papers. But CAs frequently budget for four exams and are caught out by the exemption invoice. Two deadlines matter:

30

days to pay

Exemption fees must be paid within 30 days of the award date.

14

days to change your mind

To cancel any exemption you must notify ACCA within 14 days of the award, or you lose eligibility for a refund or credit.

That 14-day window is short. Decide which exemptions you actually want before they are awarded, not after the invoice arrives.

How to claim as a CA student

  1. Run the calculator

Enter your CA status on ACCA's Exemptions Calculator. If you also hold a B.Com or M.Com, run those separately — ACCA applies whichever gives more credit.

  2. Gather official documents

ICAI certificates and marksheets, issued and stamped by ICAI. Online printouts are not accepted. Anything not in English needs a certified translation alongside the original.

  3. Apply at registration or later

You can claim with your initial ACCA registration, or afterwards through MyACCA if you clear further CA papers. Both routes work.

  4. Review what is offered — individually

Offered exemptions appear in MyACCA with the fee for each shown separately. This is the point to decide whether to sit FR or AA for exam practice instead of exempting it.

  5. Accept and pay

Claim the ones you want, pay within 30 days, and note the 14-day cancellation window.

2027 redesign

What changes for CA students in 2027

The current ACCA structure runs to the June 2027 session. New Knowledge-level exams begin July 2027, and the new Expertise and Strategic Professional exams from September 2027. The qualification reduces from 13 exams to 11.

Two changes matter specifically if you are a CA:

  • At Strategic Professional you will choose one option paper instead of two — so a fully exempt CA would face three papers rather than four.
  • The single ethics module is replaced by Essential Employability Modules across the levels.

Exemption policy is being updated as part of the transition, and passes already earned carry forward under ACCA's published transition rules. If you are close to qualifying as a CA, the timing question is worth a proper conversation rather than a guess.

Verify before deciding: exemption policy, transition rules and fees are set by ACCA and change. Confirm against ACCA's official guidance, the Exemptions Calculator and the Transition Tool before applying.

Common questions

How many ACCA exemptions does a qualified CA get?

Commonly the maximum of nine — all three Applied Knowledge papers and all six Applied Skills papers — leaving the four Strategic Professional exams, the ethics module and the practical experience requirement. ACCA confirms the exact award on a case-by-case basis.

How many ACCA exemptions does CA Inter get?

Published sources differ between five and six. The commonly cited set is BT, MA, FA, TX and AA, with some sources adding LW. ICAI's 2023 scheme change also affects how CA Inter maps to ACCA papers, so use ACCA's Exemptions Calculator for your own record rather than relying on a table.

Does CA Foundation get ACCA exemptions?

Typically not. CA Foundation study generally does not map to ACCA papers, so students at that stage usually begin at Applied Knowledge.

Can a CA get exemptions from SBL or SBR?

No. ACCA does not award exemptions at Strategic Professional level for any qualification. Every ACCA member sits SBL, SBR and two option papers, including fully qualified CAs.

Should a CA claim all nine exemptions?

Not automatically. Claiming all nine means your first ACCA exam is a Strategic Professional paper, with no prior exposure to ACCA's exam format. Some CAs deliberately sit FR or AA to learn the exam style on familiar material. Exemptions can be accepted individually rather than as a block.

Do CAs still need practical experience for ACCA?

Yes. Exemptions apply to exams only. Every ACCA member must complete 36 months of relevant experience and nine performance objectives, signed off by a supervisor. Most CAs already meet this through articleship and employment, but it must be formally recorded.

Which option papers should a CA choose?

Choose on career direction rather than syllabus familiarity. AAA suits audit backgrounds and AFM suits corporate finance paths. Be cautious with ATX — it is examined against a specific jurisdiction's tax system, so Indian tax knowledge transfers less than expected. Check which variant is available to you before choosing.
