Exam preparation tips for CA Foundation Business Laws
- ›Quote the section, then explain. Answers that name the provision before applying it score higher than answers that only describe the outcome.
- ›Chapter 2 is the anchor. The Indian Contract Act has nine units and the largest share of marks — finish it before touching anything else.
- ›Build a definitions sheet. One page per Act, revised weekly, beats re-reading the module in the last month.
- ›Practise application questions. Most marks come from short case scenarios, not from bare theory recall.
Is Business Correspondence and Reporting still in CA Foundation?
No. Business Correspondence and Reporting was part of CA Foundation Paper 2 under the Old Scheme, where the paper was titled Business Laws and Business Correspondence and Reporting. Under the ICAI New Scheme of Education and Training, BCR was removed and Paper 2 is now Business Laws only. The chapter-wise study material on this page covers the current syllabus.
Frequently asked questions
Which Acts are covered in CA Foundation Business Laws?
Seven areas: the Indian Regulatory Framework, the Indian Contract Act 1872, the Sale of Goods Act 1930, the Indian Partnership Act 1932, the Limited Liability Partnership Act 2008, the Companies Act 2013 and the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881.
Which chapter carries the most marks in Paper 2?
The Indian Contract Act 1872 is the largest chapter by both content and weightage, spread across nine units. The Companies Act 2013 and the Negotiable Instruments Act follow. Check the ICAI weightage table for your Attempt for exact ranges.
Do I need to memorize section numbers?
Section numbers are not compulsory, but quoting them correctly strengthens an answer. Prioritise the provision and its application first; add section references only where you are certain.
Is Business Laws an objective paper?
No. Paper 2 Business Laws is descriptive and written by hand, so structure, legal reasoning and presentation carry marks. Papers 3 and 4 are the objective papers in CA Foundation.
Do I still need to study Business Correspondence and Reporting?
Not for CA Foundation. Business Correspondence and Reporting was dropped when ICAI introduced the New Scheme of Education and Training. Paper 2 now covers Business Laws alone, across seven chapters from the Indian Contract Act to the Negotiable Instruments Act.
