CA Foundation exam pattern at a glance

CA Foundation has four papers of 100 marks each. Papers 1 and 2 are descriptive with no negative marking. Papers 3 and 4 are objective with 0.25 marks deducted for each incorrect answer. Because the formats differ, the same Revision Test Paper is used differently for each pair.

CA Foundation paper structure under the ICAI New Scheme of Education and Training.
Paper Format Duration Negative marking How to use the RTP
1 — Accounting Descriptive 3 hours None Write full solutions with formats and working notes
2 — Business Laws Descriptive 3 hours None Practise Provision → Analysis → Conclusion structure
3 — Quantitative Aptitude Objective 2 hours 0.25 marks Time each question; build a skip rule
4 — Business Economics Objective 2 hours 0.25 marks Test recall speed on definitions and diagrams

How should I use the RTP in my CA Foundation preparation?

Solve the Revision Test Paper after completing one full revision of the syllabus, not while studying a chapter for the first time. The RTP is a diagnostic tool: its value comes from exposing gaps under exam-like conditions and sending you back to the ICAI Study Material for the concepts you missed.

1. Attempt it closed-book and timed

Solve without referring to notes, and against a clock. A question answered correctly in four minutes is still a failure in an exam scored on speed.

2. Compare against the suggested answers

Mark yourself strictly. The suggested answers demonstrate ICAI's expected presentation format, which carries marks in the descriptive papers alongside the correct final answer.

3. Solve the last three attempts' RTPs for each paper

Topics that recur across three consecutive Revision Test Papers indicate what the Board of Studies is actively testing. Cross-referencing three attempts is far more informative than solving one RTP in isolation.

4. Pair the RTP with an MTP and past papers

Each ICAI resource serves a distinct purpose in the final month before an attempt:

Resource Released Best used for
RTP ~2 months before the attempt Chapter-wise revision and identifying examination-relevant areas
MTP ~3–4 weeks before the attempt Full-paper practice in exact exam format and duration
Past Papers After each attempt concludes Gauging real difficulty and repeated question patterns

Free resources are only half the preparation

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the full form of RTP in CA Foundation?

RTP stands for Revision Test Paper. It is an official practice document published free by the Board of Studies at ICAI before every CA Foundation attempt, containing questions with detailed suggested answers.

Is the CA Foundation RTP free to download?

Yes. Every ICAI Revision Test Paper is free and requires no registration or payment. The links on this page and its paper-wise pages open the official PDFs directly.

When does ICAI release the RTP for each CA Foundation attempt?

ICAI typically publishes the Revision Test Paper on its Board of Studies portal roughly two months before the examination begins. CA Foundation is held three times a year, in January, May and September.

Zeroinfy updates these pages with the direct PDF link for each new attempt as soon as ICAI releases it.

What is the difference between RTP and MTP in CA Foundation?

The RTP is a chapter-wise revision document released about two months before the attempt, designed to indicate examination-relevant areas. The MTP, or Mock Test Paper, is a full-length paper released three to four weeks before the attempt, designed to replicate the exact exam format and duration.

Use the RTP for topic revision and the MTP for full-paper practice.

Is solving the RTP enough to pass CA Foundation?

No. The Revision Test Paper is a revision and diagnostic tool rather than a substitute for the ICAI Study Material or structured classes. It assumes the syllabus is already complete.

Use it in the final six to eight weeks before an attempt to test retention, presentation and speed.

Are RTP questions repeated in the actual CA Foundation exam?

ICAI does not guarantee repetition. Questions frequently reappear in reworded form or with changed figures, because both the Revision Test Paper and the question paper are drafted from the same syllabus coverage. Learn the method rather than memorising a specific solution.

How many papers are there in CA Foundation?

CA Foundation has four papers of 100 marks each under the ICAI New Scheme: Paper 1 Accounting, Paper 2 Business Laws, Paper 3 Quantitative Aptitude, and Paper 4 Business Economics. Papers 1 and 2 are descriptive; Papers 3 and 4 are objective with 0.25 negative marking.

Can I use Old Scheme RTPs for the New Scheme exam?

Partly, and only for additional question practice. The Old Scheme applied to attempts up to December 2023, when Paper 1 was titled Principles and Practice of Accounting and Paper 2 included Business Correspondence and Reporting.

Use New Scheme Revision Test Papers from May 2024 onwards for attempt-specific pattern reference. Archived Old Scheme papers are available within each paper's page.
