How Long Does ACCA Take? Exams, Experience and the Real Timeline

Most guides answer the wrong question. They tell you how long the exams take. The exams are rarely what decides when you become an ACCA member.

Exams ~2 years minimum, at maximum permitted pace

ACCA allows a maximum of four exams per session and eight distinct exams per calendar year. Thirteen papers therefore cannot be cleared faster than roughly two years, however hard you push.

Membership 3 years of relevant work experience

Membership also requires 36 months of practical experience and nine performance objectives. This can be earned before, during or after your exams — which is exactly why when you start working matters as much as how fast you study.

The short answer: for most Indian students, two to four years to finish the exams, and membership whenever the 36 months of experience is complete. A student who works alongside study often reaches membership sooner than one who studies full-time and starts working afterwards.

What the journey actually looks like

Assessment takes around five working days. Exemptions take longer.

Applied Knowledge — BT, MA, FA

On-demand exams. No session to wait for, so pace is entirely yours. Many students clear these in a few months.

Applied Skills — six papers

LW is on-demand; the other five run in March, June, September and December. This is where your pace becomes session-bound.

Ethics and Professional Skills Module

Completed online. Intended after Applied Knowledge and before Strategic Professional.

Strategic Professional — four papers

SBL, SBR and two options. The seven-year clock starts the moment you pass your first one.

Practical experience signed off

36 months and nine performance objectives, verified by a supervisor. Often running in parallel with everything above.

Realistic timelines by starting point

Exemptions are the single biggest variable. Here is how the exam workload changes:

Notice that even a qualified CA with nine exemptions cannot finish in six months. Four Strategic Professional papers, at a sensible one or two per session, is a year at minimum — and that is before the ethics module and experience sign-off.

Two rules that shape your timeline

Rule 1

Four per session, eight per year

ACCA's exam progression rules cap you at four exams in any one exam cycle, and eight distinct exams across a calendar year. That is a ceiling, not a target.

Sitting four papers at once is rarely the fastest route in practice. Two well-prepared papers per session beats four attempted and two resat — resits cost you a full session and another exam fee.

Rule 2

The seven-year rule

Once you pass your first Strategic Professional exam, you have seven years to pass all four and reach affiliate status. Passes older than seven years expire and must be retaken.

Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills passes never expire. Only Strategic Professional is on a clock.

Practical implication: do not start Strategic Professional casually. Once that first pass lands, the clock is running. You can check your expiry dates any time in MyACCA.

What actually makes ACCA take longer

Almost nobody is delayed by the syllabus. These are the real causes.

Resits

A failed session-based paper costs you three months and another exam fee. Two resits can add most of a year.

Skipping a session

Missing one sitting because you were not ready is a three-month gap. Miss two and you have lost half a year.

Over-attempting

Entering four papers because the rule allows it, then clearing two. Feels ambitious; usually slower than entering two and clearing both.

Starting experience late

The 36 months is the hard floor on membership. Students who finish all exams before starting work still wait three years to qualify.

Leaving the ethics module

It is meant to be done before Strategic Professional. Left to the end, it can hold up your membership application.

Letting subscription lapse

Removal from the register means re-registration and paperwork before you can enter another exam.

Duration is a cost, not just a timeline

ACCA charges an annual subscription of £140 for every year you remain a student. Taking five years instead of three costs an extra £280 for nothing but elapsed time.

Planning a realistic pace

  1. Get your exemption result first

    You cannot plan a timeline without knowing how many papers you actually face. Run the calculator before anything else.

  2. Clear the on-demand papers early

    BT, MA, FA and LW have no session deadlines. Getting them out of the way before your first sitting-bound paper builds momentum on your own schedule.

  3. Choose a papers-per-session number and hold it

    For most students studying alongside college or work, two per session is the sustainable answer. Decide once and plan the whole route around it.

  4. Start accumulating experience as early as you can

    Because the 36 months can run in parallel, an internship or job started during study can mean membership arrives almost as soon as your exams finish.

  5. Do the ethics module in the gap

    Between Applied Skills and Strategic Professional is where it belongs. It is not an exam session, so it fits in a quiet month.

2027 redesign

How 2027 affects your timeline

The current structure runs to the June 2027 session. New Knowledge-level exams begin July 2027, and the new Expertise and Strategic Professional exams from September 2027. The qualification reduces from 13 exams to 11, with one option paper at Strategic Professional instead of two.

Fewer exams should mean a shorter exam route for students starting after the transition. For students already partway through, ACCA has published transition rules and a Transition Tool showing how existing passes carry across — you do not restart.

What has not been fully confirmed is how the seven-year rule and the experience requirement translate into the new structure.
