Do I have to be a paying Member to attend GARP chapter meetings?

GARP Chapter Meetings are open to everyone. You do not have to be an Individual or Student Member to attend; however, when you register for a Chapter Meeting you will automatically be given GARP Affiliate status.

How much does it cost to attend a GARP chapter meeting?

GARP chapter meetings are free and open to all.

What are the benefits of attending chapter meetings?

Chapter Meetings are educational events designed to help disseminate knowledge and best practices on a global scale. They are an opportunity to learn and to network with other like-minded practitioners in your area. FRM and ERP Exam candidates can meet others who are studying for the prestigious credential, and Chapter Meetings are CPD-worthy - most meetings are worth one GARP CPD credit for certified FRMs and ERPs.

How do I join my local chapter?

To find out if there is a Chapter near you, simply go to your Profile and set up your Chapter information to begin receiving Meeting invitations for up to two chapters. At GARP, you are not required to join a chapter to attend a Meeting; you can attend any Chapter Meeting anywhere in the world. If you travel often, you can check your Portal to find all upcoming Meetings. No matter where in the world you attend, you will be welcome as a GARP Member or Affiliate.

How can I get involved in my local chapter?

Volunteers are always welcome in local Chapters. Some Chapters form small committees to distribute the tasks associated with scheduling regular Meetings. Volunteers can also recommend topics and speakers, welcome new members, help with set-up at the Meeting, or work at the registration table. If you are interested in getting involved, seek out your Chapter Director at the next event or email chapters@garp.com.

What if there is no chapter in my area?

New GARP chapters can be formed to meet the need of local risk practitioners. There is an application process which validates that there is sufficient interest from the local risk community to sustain chapter activity, and which vets the volunteer leadership applying for chapter formation. If you are interested in forming a chapter in your city, please contact the Chapters Program at chapters@garp.com.

What happens at Chapter meetings?

Presentations are provided by individual speakers or panelists who impart their cutting-edge expertise on issues of relevance to risk professionals. To see what kinds of topics are addressed, please see our list of upcoming meetings. In addition, a portion of the meeting is always reserved for networking and one-on-one interactions with members of the risk community. Occasionally, a Chapter Meeting will include a recognition ceremony in honor of recently certified FRMs and ERPs.
If I am interested in a particular Meeting or speaker but cannot attend in person, are there materials that I can view?
Presentations from global chapter meetings are available on our website. In some cases the meetings are audio or video recorded. All of these materials can be found here

Who attends chapter meetings?

Chapter meetings contain a mix of senior, mid-level, and junior practitioners as well as academics and students.

Will attending chapter meetings help me pass the FRM or ERP exams?

While Chapter Meetings cover a variety of pertinent topics in the field of risk management and may help FRM and ERP candidates to better understand the industry, GARP leaves the majority of Exam preparation to third party providers. Some chapters will facilitate candidates in forming local study groups on their own. If this is among your interests, look for "Study Group Formation" in your local Chapter Meeting's description.
