ACCA is redesigning its qualification. If you are starting now, or partway through, this is the page that tells you what it means for you — without the panic that usually surrounds it.
Should I wait until 2027 to start?
No.
Every paper you pass under the current structure carries forward automatically into the redesigned qualification. There is no resit, no reapplication, and no loss of progress. Waiting costs you a year and gains you nothing.
The only students for whom timing genuinely matters are those already close to finishing a level. That situation is covered further down.
What actually changes
The headline is that the qualification drops from 13 exams to 11. Three specific changes get you there.
BT disappears as an exam
Business and Technology is removed as a standalone paper. Its material is absorbed elsewhere in the redesigned pathway.
Law moves down a level
Corporate and Business Law shifts from Applied Skills to the Knowledge level, becoming K3 Business Law.
One option instead of two
At Strategic Professional you choose a single Options exam rather than two — but from a wider set of five specialisms.

ACCA has published guidance packs with full syllabi, specimen exams and specimen answers for each level. Check those for exact paper names and content rather than relying on any summary — including this one.
The ethics module becomes three modules
Today there is a single Ethics and Professional Skills Module. From 2027 there are three Essential Employability Modules, one built into each level — non-exam, assessed, and focused on workplace capability.

ACCA has confirmed that exemptions are not available for the Essential Employability Modules — the Digital Tech and Innovation module at Expertise level is named specifically, on the basis that it covers new and emerging skills every student needs.
Nor is any element of Strategic Professional exemptable, which is already the case today. If you are counting on a large exemption block, these modules still have to be completed.

Current syllabus, business as usual
Everything up to and including the June 2027 session runs on the existing structure. Nothing about your current plan changes.
Essential Employability Modules go live
The new modules become available ahead of the first new exams.

First Foundations and Knowledge exams
On-demand computer-based exams under the new structure. Current LW on-demand exams run to a slightly later July timetable — check ACCA's live dates before booking.
First Expertise and Strategic Professional exams
The redesigned session-based exams begin. Entry opens ahead of the session in the usual way.
Do not save a paper for June 2027
June 2027 is the final session for current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams. If you plan to clear your last paper there and you do not pass, there is no second attempt under the current structure — you resit under the new one.
Practical rule: aim to be finished, or comfortably mid-level, by the March 2027 session. Leave yourself one spare sitting. That single decision removes almost all transition risk from your plan.
What happens to papers I've already passed?
They carry forward. Automatically.
ACCA has published transition rules confirming that every current paper has a direct equivalent in the redesigned qualification, and a pass in the current paper gives automatic credit for the new one. No resitting. No application form. No action needed on your part.
The same applies to exemptions — ACCA has published an updated exemption policy alongside the transition guidance, and students working through Foundations in Accountancy receive credit for equivalent elements at transition.

You will begin under the current structure and finish under the new one. That is normal and ACCA has planned for it. Waiting until late 2027 costs you more than a year for no benefit.

These are on-demand papers, so you control the pace. Clear them and move up. Your passes map straight across.
Midway through Applied Skills
Carry on, but plan sittings
Map your remaining papers against the sessions left before June 2027. Leave one spare sitting in case a resit is needed. Anything unfinished transitions to Expertise.
Started Strategic Professional
Finish under the current structure if you can
You need two options today; from 2027 only one is required. But the seven-year rule still applies to Strategic Professional passes, so check your existing pass dates and plan to finish rather than drift.
One nuance worth knowing: from 2027, ACCA plans eventually to allow part of the practical experience requirement to be earned through Optional Employability Modules — but not from September 2027. Plan on the full 36 months.

Should I wait until 2027 to start ACCA?
No. Every paper passed under the current structure carries forward automatically into the redesigned qualification, with no resit and no application needed. Waiting costs you more than a year of progress in exchange for a structure that is different rather than easier.
How many exams will ACCA have from 2027?
Eleven, down from thirteen. Three at Knowledge level, five at Expertise level, and three at Strategic Professional — two core exams plus one Options exam. Three Essential Employability Modules sit alongside them, one per level.
Why does the exam count drop from 13 to 11?
Three changes. Business and Technology is removed as a standalone exam, Corporate and Business Law moves down to the Knowledge level as K3 Business Law, and Strategic Professional requires one Options exam instead of two.
When exactly do the changes take effect?
Everything up to and including the June 2027 session runs on the current syllabus. Essential Employability Modules become available in early 2027. The first Foundations and Knowledge exams run from July 2027, and the first Expertise and Strategic Professional exams from September 2027.
Will I lose papers I have already passed?

What are the Essential Employability Modules?
Three assessed, non-exam modules replacing the current single Ethics and Professional Skills Module — one at each level, covering responsible business management, digital technology and innovation, and strategic capability. Exemptions are not available for them.
Does the practical experience requirement change in 2027?
No. It remains 36 months of relevant experience with nine performance objectives. ACCA plans in future to allow part of it to be earned through Optional Employability Modules, but not from September 2027, so plan on the full 36 months.
Is it risky to leave my last paper until June 2027?
Yes. June 2027 is the final session for current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams. If you do not pass, there is no second attempt under the current structure. Aim to finish by the March 2027 session so you have a spare sitting in reserve.
