Yes, you can start ACCA straight after Class 12 — it is one of the few professional qualifications that lets you begin at 18. This page covers what you need, what the next five years actually look like, and the one mistake students at this stage most often make.
Can I actually start after Class 12?
ACCA accepts students directly after school. You do not need a degree, and you do not need to wait.
What ACCA checks is whether your Class 12 qualification meets its minimum entrance standard — broadly, passes in five separate subjects including English and either Mathematics or Accounts.
And if your marks do not meet that standard, you are still not blocked. There is a second route, covered below.
Most Indian websites state a specific percentage requirement — usually 65% in Maths or Accounts and English, 50% elsewhere. We have not been able to confirm those exact figures as ACCA's own published wording, which is framed around subject passes rather than percentages.

If you do not meet direct entry
ACCA runs a Foundations level specifically for students whose qualifications fall short of direct registration. You complete that, then move onto the main ACCA Qualification.
It adds time. It does not close the door. A lot of students give up at this point simply because nobody told them this route exists.
Does it matter which stream I took?
The most common route. Accounts and Business Studies give you a head start on the first three papers, though none of it is assumed knowledge.
Eligible, and the quantitative papers often come easily. You will be learning accounting from scratch, which the first level is designed for.
Eligible on the same basis. The requirement is English plus Mathematics or Accounts — not a commerce stream.
This is where the entrance table matters most. You may need the Foundations route rather than direct entry.
A commerce background makes the early papers feel familiar. It does not decide whether you are allowed to register.
Where you will actually be, year by year
Assuming you start at 18 and study alongside a degree.
Register and start
You register with ACCA and begin Applied Knowledge — BT, MA and FA. All three are on-demand, meaning you book them when you are ready rather than waiting for an exam season. You also start your degree.
Realistic: one paper every two to three months alongside first-year college.
First level done, moving up
Applied Knowledge cleared and the Diploma in Accounting and Business earned. You start Applied Skills — six papers, most of which run in fixed March, June, September and December sessions.
Realistic: two papers per session, not four.
Working through Applied Skills
Halfway through the technical core. This is also the year to start thinking about an internship — because your three years of work experience can begin now and run alongside everything else.
Starting work experience early is what decides whether you qualify at 23 or 26.
Degree finished, Applied Skills finished
You graduate with a degree and nine ACCA papers behind you. You move into Strategic Professional — the final four papers.
This is the payoff for starting at 18 rather than after graduation.
Exams complete
Strategic Professional cleared, ethics module done. You are an ACCA affiliate — everything finished except the experience requirement.
ACCA member
Once your 36 months of relevant work experience is complete and signed off, you become a member. If you started interning at 20, this arrives close behind your final exam. If you started working at 22, it arrives three years later.
The years above assume you pass consistently and keep moving. Most students have a resit somewhere, and a resit at Applied Skills costs you three months. Add a year to everything above and you will still be ahead of someone who waited until after graduation to start.
Do not drop college to focus on ACCA
Every year, students at this stage decide a degree is a distraction and that full-time ACCA study will get them there faster. It is the single worst decision available to you, for three reasons.
- ACCA is designed to run alongside a degree. The first four papers are on-demand precisely so they fit around college terms and exams. You are not choosing between them.
- A degree opens doors ACCA does not. Many employers, visa routes, and postgraduate programmes require a bachelor's degree. ACCA alone does not substitute for one.
- You lose your fallback. If ACCA turns out not to suit you at 20, a half-finished qualification and no degree is a genuinely difficult position.
Do both. That is the plan the qualification was built for, and it is why starting at 18 is an advantage rather than a gamble.
Your first year, step by step

Check the entrance table
Find your board qualification on ACCA's country list and confirm it is sufficient for registration. Do this before anything else.

Register online
Through ACCA's website. You will need photo ID and your Class 12 marksheet, issued officially by your board. Assessment usually takes about five working days.

Start your degree in parallel
B.Com, BBA or anything else. Do not treat it as secondary.

Book your first on-demand exam
Most students start with MA or FA. Both are on-demand, so you sit them when you feel ready rather than on a fixed date.

Five mistakes students make at this stage
Assuming Class 12 earns exemptions
It does not. Exemptions come from degrees and professional qualifications. Starting from school means all 13 papers.
Ruling themselves out on a percentage
Widely quoted mark thresholds are not necessarily ACCA's own wording. Check the entrance table before deciding you are not eligible.
Rushing the on-demand papers
Booking is easy, so students book before they are ready. A failed on-demand paper still costs a fee and knocks your confidence.
Waiting until graduation to start working
The 36-month experience requirement can run alongside study. Students who intern from 20 qualify years earlier than those who start at 22.
Choosing ACCA because CA sounds harder
ACCA is a full professional qualification with 13 exams and three years of experience. Picking it as the easier option ends badly. Compare them properly →
What parents usually want to know
Most Class 12 decisions are made as a family, so here are straight answers to the questions we are asked most.
Is this a recognised qualification?
Yes. ACCA is a UK-based professional accountancy body recognised in around 180 countries, and its members work across Indian companies, multinationals and global capability centres.
Can they still become a CA later?
Yes. The two are separate qualifications and many students hold both. Starting ACCA does not close the CA route.
Will they have to move abroad?
No. International recognition is an option the qualification gives them, not a requirement. Many ACCA members build entire careers in India.
Should they skip college for this?
No — and we would say the same if it cost us a sale. ACCA is built to run alongside a degree. A student should finish both.
Can they audit companies in India?
No. Statutory audit signing rights in India belong exclusively to Chartered Accountants qualified through ICAI. If Indian practice is the goal, CA is the route.
What if they change their mind at 20?
Papers already passed do not expire at the first two levels, and they will still have their degree. That is precisely why the degree matters.
Why 2027 matters more to you than to anyone else
If you start now at 18, you will begin under the current structure and finish under a redesigned one. ACCA's qualification changes from mid-2027, dropping from 13 exams to 11.
This is not a reason to wait. Every paper you pass carries forward automatically — no resits, no reapplication, no lost progress. Waiting a year to start under the new structure costs you a year and gains you nothing.
What it does mean is that your later papers will be named differently from your early ones. That is normal, and ACCA has published a Transition Tool showing exactly how your progress maps across.

Can I do ACCA after Class 12?
