CA Inter exam pattern at a glance
CA Intermediate has six papers of 100 marks each, split across two groups of three. Every paper runs for three hours and combines case scenario based objective questions with descriptive questions. Because the papers differ sharply in nature, the same Revision Test Paper is used differently for each.
| Group | Paper | Nature | How to use the RTP |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | 1 — Advanced Accounting | Numerical and theory | Write full solutions with Schedule III formats and working notes |
| I | 2 — Corporate and Other Laws | Theory and case-based | Practise Provision → Analysis → Conclusion structure |
| I | 3 — Taxation | Numerical and provisions | Confirm the applicable assessment year before solving |
| II | 4 — Cost and Management Accounting | Predominantly numerical | Time each numerical; write the cost statement format in full |
| II | 5 — Auditing and Ethics | Fully theoretical | Answer in points and cite the Standard on Auditing by number |
| II | 6 — FM and SM | Half numerical, half theory | Practise the two sections separately, 90 minutes each |
How should I use the RTP in my CA Inter preparation?
Solve the Revision Test Paper after completing one full revision of the syllabus, not while studying a chapter for the first time. The RTP is a diagnostic tool: its value comes from exposing gaps under exam-like conditions and sending you back to the ICAI Study Material for the concepts you missed.
1. Attempt it closed-book and timed
Solve without referring to notes, and against a clock. CA Intermediate papers are long relative to three hours, and speed is the most common reason for incomplete answer scripts.
2. Compare against the suggested answers
Mark yourself strictly. The suggested answers demonstrate ICAI's expected presentation format, which carries marks alongside the correct final answer in every paper.
3. Solve the last three attempts' RTPs per paper
Topics that recur across three consecutive Revision Test Papers indicate what the Board of Studies is actively testing. Cross-referencing three attempts is far more informative than solving one RTP in isolation.
4. Know which papers age and which do not
Taxation is the one paper where older Revision Test Papers actively mislead, because rates and thresholds change with each Finance Act. Cost and Management Accounting is the opposite, since costing principles remain stable and archived papers stay fully usable.
5. Pair the RTP with an MTP and past papers
Each ICAI resource serves a distinct purpose in the final month before an attempt:
| Resource | Released | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| RTP | ~2 months before the attempt | Chapter-wise revision and identifying examination-relevant areas |
| MTP | ~3–4 weeks before the attempt | Full-paper practice in exact exam format and duration |
| Past Papers | After each attempt concludes | Gauging real difficulty and repeated question patterns |
Free resources are only half the preparation

What is the full form of RTP in CA Inter?
RTP stands for Revision Test Paper. It is an official practice document published free by the Board of Studies at ICAI before every CA Intermediate attempt, containing questions with detailed suggested answers.
How many papers are there in CA Inter?
CA Intermediate has six papers of 100 marks each under the ICAI New Scheme, split across two groups. Group I covers Advanced Accounting, Corporate and Other Laws, and Taxation. Group II covers Cost and Management Accounting, Auditing and Ethics, and Financial Management and Strategic Management.
Is the CA Inter RTP free to download?
Yes. Every ICAI Revision Test Paper is free and requires no registration or payment. The links on this page and its paper-wise pages open the official PDFs directly.
When does ICAI release the RTP for each CA Inter attempt?
ICAI typically publishes the Revision Test Paper on its Board of Studies portal roughly two months before the examination begins. CA Intermediate is held three times a year, in January, May and September.
Zeroinfy updates these pages with the direct PDF link for each new attempt as soon as ICAI releases it.
What is the difference between RTP and MTP in CA Inter?
The RTP is a chapter-wise revision document released about two months before the attempt, designed to indicate examination-relevant areas. The MTP, or Mock Test Paper, is a full-length paper released three to four weeks before the attempt, designed to replicate the exact exam format and duration.
Use the RTP for topic revision and the MTP for full-paper practice.
Is solving the RTP enough to pass CA Inter?
No. The Revision Test Paper is a revision and diagnostic tool rather than a substitute for the ICAI Study Material or structured classes. It assumes the syllabus is already complete.
Use it in the final six to eight weeks before an attempt to test retention, presentation and speed.
Can I use Old Scheme RTPs for the New Scheme exam?
It depends on the paper. Cost and Management Accounting and Advanced Accounting archived papers remain highly usable, since the underlying principles are stable.
Taxation archived papers must be treated with caution because rates and provisions change annually. Auditing archived papers omit the Ethics chapter entirely, and Paper 6 has no Old Scheme equivalent at all.
Which CA Inter papers changed under the New Scheme?
The New Scheme reduced CA Intermediate from eight papers to six. Advanced Accounting moved from Group II Paper 5 to Group I Paper 1, Taxation moved from Paper 4 to Paper 3, and Cost and Management Accounting moved from Group I Paper 3 to Group II Paper 4.
Auditing and Assurance was renamed Auditing and Ethics, and Financial Management and Strategic Management was newly constituted as Paper 6.
